Finally got around to watching this. I remembered reading Roger Ebert's review of it in my parents' copy of his book, and saw it on "worst ever" lists many times since.

My own taste is often at odds with reviews, but Heaven's Gate really is a turd in the punch bowl. It amazes me that no one has called it out for its real sins:

1) It's such an obvious Godfather rip-off

2) It's cliched. One of the main characters is a literal hooker with a heart of gold.

3) It opens with like 10 minutes of fiddle music against a black screen.

4) We're expected to believe Kris Kristofferson as a Harvard undergraduate. He could easily have had kids at Harvard by the time this was released.

5) The nudity is all forced and awkward, except for the nude corpses which are just grody and depressing.

6) The whole thing has this sort of bland yet heavy-handed moralism about it. It's like being forced to watch an Alan Alda marathon.

7) To wit, there's this weird attempt to prove that Country music is really from Lithuania or something. That's probably what the 10 minutes of darkness was about.

8) The protagonists are not sympathetic characters. Some guy who graduated from Harvard helping a hooker who helps people fence stolen cattle- if this weren't a period piece these people would be stealing catalytic converters in Council Bluffs, IA

Anyway, I'm all tuckered out now, but Heaven's Gate really does suck, so much that a lot of the specific reasons that it sucks haven't previously been written down- hence this post.

One of the few actors I hate more than Costner.

I've tried watching it but never made it far. The roller rink in 1880s Wyoming is kinda out there...

I love Cimino. Deer Hunter may be my favorite film of all time... But Heavens Gate is so clearly over the top self indulgence, no-handcuff filmmaking at its worst.

It's a truly terrible film. Beautiful... But terrible.

I would describe it as a film that could have been beautiful. You can tell that they shot a lot of really good film in some beautiful places, right when the sun was right, but there's this infuriating sameness to every shot. It's like a three-year old shot it in her favorite color, damn common sense, and I do see the unhealthy influence of The Godfather in there.

I laughed out loud at this.

There are all kinds of stories about Cimino doing crazy stuff on set and dooming this picture (and the studio) to ruin.

For example he had a fake western town built in Montana. Normally these Hollywood set piece towns are just cheap facades painted to look real from the street view. But he wanted his town to be authentic structures. Then he decided that the dirt road separating the two sides of the street wasn't wide enough so he ordered both sides to be torn down and rebuilt 10 feet back. When the art director told him that was stupid to begin with plus they could achieve the same result by simply tearing down one side and moving it back 20 feet he pitched a fit and demanded it be done his way or everyone is fired.

Yes! This one doesn't get talked about much but it is a gem and definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it before.

I’m with you on most of your points but on point 4, isn’t it supposed to be 20 years later? So the Kristofferson character should be 42 or so.

That seems fine in a film that is otherwise full of issues.

Every time I see "Heaven's Gate" all I can think about is that loon who got his sheeple to commit suicide thinking they'd be carried away by some alien beings that were in a UFO trailing the Hale-Bopp Comet.

Lone Star is coming in January in 4k by Criterion.

It has never been on bluray to my knowledge. Pre-ordered

Ever seen what Michael Cimino did to his face? Went from looking like a portly Italian American to Yoko Ono

They had been waiting for years to be picked up by that UFO. And then one night one of the members was listening to Art Bell’s radio show where a “scientist” claimed that a UFO was spotted on the comet photographs. So they decided it was finally time. Hilarious and disturbing.

He would be in his 40s most of the movie, but the opening scenes are set at his graduation from Harvard.

Using Kristofferson, etc. for that part just seems weird and lazy. It makes it difficult to suspend disbelief in the first few minutes of the movie, which seems really bad.
