Seems pretty stupid on its face, regardless of who proposed it.

We should have never given up Bagram. But now that we did, trying to reacquire it by having to subject ourselves to the whims of the Pakistanis and the Taliban seems incredibly stupid.

What purpose would reacquiring Bagram even have?

Look at a map.

We have no assets anywhere close to Bagram now. There is no way to access it without going through Russia and then one of the Stans, China, Iran, or Pakistan. So that means going through Pakistan for hundreds of miles and then hundreds more in Afghanistan. All by plane and all requiring the permission of the Taliban and Pakistan.

Let's assume you get the base. What are you going to do with it? Even getting fuel there is going to be a freaking nightmare and you will need a massive amount of troops to keep it secure. Then anything you do from it will have to be approved by the Taliban and Pakistan or they can just cut off access at any time. Of course if they do you can always just go back to war. Pakistan has nukes btw so that's lots of fun.

So explain to me how expending massive resources, billions upon billions of dollars, and risking WWIII is worth getting Bagram back? "We don't want China to have it" isn't a good enough reason, that ship sailed.

Seriously, just go to a map and look at Bagram which is East of Kabul and then explain to me how we maintain a base like that. Our nearest military installation of size is probably Qatar (which is a whole other issue) or maybe Diego Garcia. It's just a logistical impossibility on top of everything else. Once we left Afghanistan we weren't going to be able to get back in without a lot of pain and that juice is definitely not worth the squeeze.

What are we going to do there, anyway, now that we evacuated pretty much all of Central Asia? Spy on the Pakistanis? We can do that from Qatar, Bahrain, Diego Garcia, etc.

Yep, that's reason #4 or 5 why it is a stupid idea. We can't rewind the clock where we controlled Afghanistan and could do as we wished there either, it's enemy territory now.

Trump is saying it is so we can strike Chinese nuke facilities in Western China faster but realistically if it comes to that we can get here awfully quick and will do so with missiles anyway. We aren't doing a bombing run of China from Bagram in any real world scenario even if we ignore all the other insanity behind the idea.

Yea that will never happen. As you say, if it came to that the missiles are coming over the Arctic/North Pacific from AK or CONUS, or from subs in the IO. We aren't strafing the Uighyur camps.
