Trip to Key West or Fort Lauderdale.

I came here instead of the Travel board since it is related to a guided fishing trip. We are planning on doing a family vacation / son graduation trip in a couple of years. Would be going in May or June of 2026. Just gathering some ideas. Definitely wanting to go Peacock Bass fishing, kill an iguana, and do a deep-sea fishing trip. My wife and daughter would be with us but doubt they would join us fishing.
Would you recommend going to the keys or Fort Lauderdale and why?

Key West is just a different experience. It is tourist but still fun. If you go there, also try the back country fishing.

Fly into Ft.Lauderdale or Miami
knock out peacock bass with a guide in the Miami area
drive to Islamorada and go offshore with Nick Stanczyk or one of his captains. Also go to robbie's and hand feed wild tarpon off the dock
drive to key west and enjoy yourself for a few days doing different excursions
edit: the miami to key west drive is fricking awesome. Such a beautiful drive if you have never done it before.
I can't help you with the iguana hunting but they are all over the fricking place so it shouldn't be hard to find someone to take you

Iguana is not a deal breaker for sure. I hear they are all over the place.
Thanks for the recommendations.

Also stop at "No Name Pub" on Big Pine Key for some drinks. Real cool vibe and you can drive a few minutes past the pub and see a bunch of wild key deer roaming the streets.

I've been to key west once and LOVED it - great place to visit. Reminds me a bit of the French Quarter (the better parts) at the beach.
I went fishing and did ok, it was rough day.
However, after i visited i learned about two trips that are now on my bucket list.
1) Dry Tortugas

2) Marquesas

You might bag one with your rental car.

In May and early June snook will be open and loaded up on the beaches. I would go somewhere between Melbourne and Stuart and flat line live bait in the surf in the morning....catching snook on your own in the surf is easy and in my opinion beats anything a guide can do anywhere anytime. There is also a good offshore bite off Stuart that time of year. Sails are not thick but but not uncommon and all the other usual suspects will be present and hungry.
Key West is a blast but the fishing is, in my experience, waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy over rated and even more over priced. Key West is home to some of the best inshore and offshore fisherman to ever walk a fiberglass deck...they put A LOT of pressure on fish in the area. DIY fishing in Key West is VERY FRUSTRTATING....and good one off charters are hard to come by...if you haven't been fishing with them for years they will book you and you'll be passed off to someone else who may or may not know anything at all about what they are doing other than what they were told.
Peacock bass are an EASY thing to diy in south florida. Almost every body of water in their range is loaded with them and they are aggressive. Catching a monster is not commmon but catching a pile of them is. There are guides of course. I have no experience with them but I assume they are like most guides and only as good as they are willing to work hard...I would do it on my own and if it did not work out Id hire a guide as a last resort...

The Keys over Lauderdale by a mile. I prefer inshore to offshore so would go out of World Wide Sportsman but Bud N' Mary's just up the highway is great for both. Both are in Islamorada. As for lodging, Key West is a blast for everyone, especially a graduate. I really like Hawks Cay resort on Duck Key but it is much more low key. The only real downside to the Keys are the lack of beaches but the state park at Bahia Honda has a great one.

If u end up fishing out of Bud n Mary’s the little hotel/resort that’s a few buildings back up the road is nice. They have a good pool and tiki bar and it’s walking distance for the next morning fishing trip. There’s not much to do down there for the ladies assuming she doesn’t fish. Not many restaurants, beaches, etc. Cool place to check out though.

I like inshore fishing a lot better as well. Yea my wife and daughter doesn’t fish at all so thanks for the recommendations.

You bet, you will love it. Its one of my favorite places in the world.
There are a few other non-fishing things I can speak too. The Dolphin Research Center in Marathon offers in-water swimming with dolphins and is a working research center, not a for-profit Sea World type thing. It was pricy but a really cool experience. In Key Largo, John Pennenkamp State Park has the best snorkeling in the continental US and well worth renting kayaks to explore. I'm a history nerd, and loved the Harry Truman Little White House museum in Key West. Walking the bars of Duval Street was also a great way to get your day drunk on. A lot of great local dive bars as well.

No peacocks in the keys but you could spend a day or half day and catch one pretty easy in ft lauderdale without a guide
Every canal has them and a whole suite of exotics
A live shiner freelined in front of them will catch them
Iguanas are everywhere in lauderdale down to key largo. They will run if they see you but if you can see one from a distance, you can cast a plastic frog or plastic worm/fluke and drag it on front of them and they will grab it
