we don’t want to overextend ourselves on a house.
Good luck trying to do that in DFW. That RE market is beyond ridiculous. You are going to have to pick between nice and convenient location, you wont be able to afford both. You can find nice areas to live, but you will be in bumfrick Egypt. You can find convenient places to live, but you will be in with the hood folk, the barrio or the white trash.
Rockwall is really tough because you have one artery back to the rest of the metroplex and its pretty much always a parking lot.
Its kind of depressing to watch the insanity that is the DFW RE market. We would like to move back at some point but I am really not sure how with how much a damned house costs there.

It can be done but you have to take your time. I sat watching a house that I knew wouldn’t sell due to the cosmetic upgrades that needed to be done. Everyone wants walk in ready out where I am at. Got it last year after it dropped $200K, done all the work myself and likely will pocket a ton on sweat equity when it comes time for me to sell.
