I’m looking to get a mid-60’s Fender Bassman amp head. Anyone have recent experience with one? It will be used for gigs and recording. Price range?
TIA

They are all over the internet. $1,200 - $2,000.

For guitar or bass?

Lackluster bass amp by most bassists' standards, needs and expectations, and I'm being polite the way I phrased that.

Incredible guitar amp if you want the perfect pedal platform and don't need onboard reverb.

I have heard that. Part of the incentive is I have a Mesa head now that plays fine but I despise the speak-on cable. But it pretty light and that is becoming a factor in the decision. A Bassman head will weight a lot more.

If you play a Mesa bass head, my hunch is that a vintage Bassman head is going to fall WAY short of your expectations.

for recording that's a good amp for bass.

for playing live, that's a bad amp for bass.

Mesa or GK. Find a GK 800RB in good condition and thank me later.

Why you no like speakon?

ETA: Didn’t see you have a Mesa head. If you have to have a classic amp, get an SVT.

I have a 64. A Strat sounds great through it. A bass is underwhelming, especially when compared to modern bass amps.

TD posters only use Fender Bassman combo amps. From 1957-59 and for guitar.

Come back when you add a zero to your disposable income ya’ poor.

I love vintage bass heads. Had svt’s v4’s b25’s etc. lot of upkeep and they aren’t dependable live at all. Plus they weigh a ton. I sold all of my vintage gear and bought a dark glass 900 a few years back and haven’t regretted it since. It sounds close to tube and weighs like 8 lbs and fits in a carrying case with a strap. For recording I used the studio’s low wattage bass amp they had there and it sounded great.

I ageee with all of this. I have had an svt and a peavey before switching to a new bassman 500 that is small and light. But it quit working after a few years and I went with Mesa 800. I have trouble with the Speakon cable, sometimes I can’t get it twisted just right to disengage. This thing is light and like yours comes with a bag.
