X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, will begin charging new users $1 a year to access key features including the ability to tweet, reply, quote, repost, like, bookmark, and create list, according to a source familiar with the matter

X owner Elon Musk has long floated the idea of charging users $1 for the platform. During a recent livestreamed conversation with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month, Musk said “It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots.”

This is a great way to completely kill growth.

Most people will absolutely not pay for a social media account, even if it is just $1 a year (which, let's be honest, will rise in price quickly).

Again, Twitter was already on a death spiral, losing money, and no way close to being profitable or on a profitable trajectory before Elon took over.

At least he is trying things to make it work. At worse, it folds which it was always going to do.

Stopping bots and fake accounts is a huge step in the right direction.

Literally every news story about Twitter has been “the end of Twitter” ever since he took over. It hasn’t crashed, all news orgs are still on it and posting, people are paying to be verified, it’s still quoted in all news articles and all competitors are no threat.

Elon's money is largely backed by massive government subsidies.

Twitter's valuation went from 44 billion dollars at the time of purchase to 4 billion dollars. He managed to devalue the company 90% in less than a year and a half. He is not a good business man

And of course, taking the brand name that everyone knew, that was so ingrained in culture that it turned to a verb associated with using your service, and changing it to a letter was a big step in those attempts.

First of all while a billionaire obviously has a good grasp on things, it doesn't mean they are know all. And they are not successful in EVERY business opportunity they take. And that's okay, you learn from it.

Second, people can have opinions. I am not an idiot who just thinks "Well I trust them so I don't have to know anything because that person has a lot of money so let me blow him".

So go frick yourself.

Twitter has roughly 500+ million active users a month. At $1 a year that’s a lot of money. People will pay it if they are already on it.

I wonder how many of those active users are bots or more than one account. Would be interesting to see the numbers each month.

I’m guessing stopping bots and troll accounts, proving real usage and real engagement is the way to then be able to attract advertisers back and be able to charge more for impressions/engagement because there’s more trust in the usage

he’s been focused on bots/fake usage ever since he even hinted at buying Twitter…so I assume they have explored all the options to stop bots and nothing has worked to make dent so this is the next step. It’s not about the money from subscriptions…the process of having to enter payment will stop the mass bot troll farms and $1 means more in the developing countries those come from

Elon just needs to find 44 billion suckers to get his investment back.
