Just finished it. It was great until the last 15 minutes. When Madeline went on her 3-4 minute sermon about how consumerism is the “real evil” in this world and how they’re just a product of society, I just rolled my fricking eyes. Also when they took a shot at Trump with the 5th avenue quote and then Mark Hamill stopped playing Arthur for a second when he said “WhEn Is HiS tImE cOmInG? eVeN I hAvE mY lImItS!”

Typical preachy Hollywood has to almost face plant on the last 15 minutes because they can’t help themselves by acting like they are somehow morally superior to normal Americans.

I still think this season was WAY better than Midnight Mass. It’s only second to Hill House.

I made it through thirty minutes and nothing of this show is remotely related to the Fall of the House of Usher story. Granted, it’s been 30 years since I’ve read it, but nothing other than the name relates to the original story. So you want to write a series about Purdue Pharma and their bullshite, fine, but why unnecessarily drag Edgar Allen Poe into this nonsense??? Call it Fall of the House of Purdue and be done with it.

Sometimes I think this board is specifically looking for a fight.

Preaching against consumerism doesn’t seem like an attack on middle America as much as it’s an attack on the insta celebrity culture that’s steeped in vanity where material possessions add up to your life’s worth

One of the themes of the show is that the famous and wealthy might actually have less than the working class in terms of what matters in this world. Far from a look down on normal Americans imo

And honestly, it’s just dribble from Madeline at that point who is trying to justify the deal they made for the life they lived.

We finished the show tonight and we really enjoyed it. I appreciated seeing Verna’s gentleness with Lenore when it was her time. And also appreciated the heavier hand she used with Fraudrick (hah) when it was his time. Carla Gugino was absolutely fantastic this series. I hope it earns her some accolades.

Also worth noting Verna is an anagram of raven. A nice touch.

Yes and no. The overlying premise of a morally corrupt dynastic family being destroyed for their sins is still there. The rest of it was just a clever way to weave some of Poe's other characters and story lines into the plot.

Mike Flanagan did the same with two of his previous horror series. Both "The Haunting of Hill House" and "The Haunting of Bly Manor" took inspiration from their source material, but Flanagan greatly expanded on the basic premises of each story.

Yep. I made 30 minutes too. Anyone who likes this I need to bookmark so I won't take their opinion seriously ever again

5 episodes in and I’m really enjoying it. Not to the level of Hill House but better than Bly and Midnight Mass.

But like many have said, the forced diversity checklist is insane. I know Flanagan likes to use the same actors in his work, but it does take you out of the show a bit.

Spolier alert:

Of course the Devil makes a reference to Trump as one of her clients at the end. These people just can't help themselves. Why is it so hard to leave your personal politics out of entertainment?

I hated every single person in this show and it was way over the top. I finished it but only because it was mostly on in the background. So many predictable moments. You could almost guess how everyone was going to die.

I never got the impression that Verna was the Devil. She was more like the facilitator of karma.

I'm afraid that the days of movies and television shows just being entertainment are over. There will always be some sort of message. It sucks, but it is what it is. Hollywood will always push their agenda, or at least try to.

I didn’t hate it, but it’s far from my favorite Flanaverse show. Sometimes it felt like they were trying to do their best Succession impressions, but these actors are just not on that level. The one legged girl was especially out of place. Most of the scary parts were during his conversations with the attorney simply because of jump scares.

I think I have 2-3 eps left, but I sort of agree with others here that it’s considerably behind hill house & midnight mass, but still above bly manor.

I’ve enjoyed it enough, but it also seems the least spooky to me of all his series.

It’s been forever since I’ve read the short story, but isn’t that a major theme in the short story? Pie’s use of foreshadowing?

I really loved this show it was so fricking good.

Gonna check out the haunting on hill house now. Flannagan is a master of horror easily one of the GOAT's.

That's because each episode they basically showed the dead body of the person that was going to die. It wasn't too hard to surmise what was going to happen.

Overall I liked the show. Had some good jump scares and decent story.

Dude, you went 30 minutes and abandoned it because you didn't see the connection. It's 8 episodes long. Each episode is a riff of an Edgar Allen Poe short story, but the series as a whole relates to Usher. Each episode is about Roderick telling the story, but elements of Usher are in each episode which, i assume, culminates at the end. I have watched 5 episodes now and each episode progresses the main story (Usher) whilst diving into each short story.

E1 - A midnight Dreary
E2 - Masque of the red death
E3 - Murder in the Rue Morgue
E4 - The black cat
E5 - The Tell-Tale Heart
E6 - Goldbug
E7 - The Pit and the Pendulum
E8 - The Raven

I mean, it's not a twitter feed so you won't get instant gratification that your ADD heart desires.
