40 years ago this story would be very believable. Young women on Kibbutz were almost always trained soldiers, and there are many examples of women fighting bravely back then in Israel.

What is also believable is that western media are suckers for heroes that are not white males. We saw this when Reagan sent in the troops to Panama. Immediately there was a brave woman who led her troops on a valiant attack against tremendous odds. Turns out she saw no actual action and was guarding a dog kennel.

I could see this one going either way.

This story has gotten enough coverage that if it isn't true, you'd 100% expect to see it disputed by a reputable source.

Haven't seen it disputed yet, except in this thread.
