My brother bought a large tuck with a start-stop feature … he turned it off for a couple of reasons.

1. Said that the fuel savings were negligible for his driving habits. This leads me to believe that any cut in CO2 emissions would also be negligible.

2. The damned AC turns off too, and that shite is unacceptable in Louisiana.

Hate this feature, has to hurt vehicles with constantly turning on/off. I hit the off button in my truck as soon as I get in. I’m so used to doing it I don’t even realize it at this point.

.17 gallons per hour idling X 8.9 kg CO2 = 1.5 kg CO2 per hour idling.

Luckily I bought during the chip shortage and my truck came without it.

Depending on your driving habits, it can actually increase emissions with frequent stops of a few seconds. The engine has to use a pretty good squirt of fuel to get started and a little more to get idle speed sorted out. It's a really stupid thing.

Not really..restarting warm engine doesn't do any harm.

I feel like some prominent automotive YouTuber did a test on this. They measured fuel consumption for an engine to start up and settle into an idle; from there they figured out how long you’d have to be at a stop for it to be worth it.

ETA: YouTube Looks like they came up with about seven seconds as the break even point. Smaller engines. Did say under most common city driving conditions it saves about 4% on fuel.

it also uses fuel while running, did you know that? The little bit of fuel used to recharge the starting battery after ignition is just being used to turn the engine over a few times...vs the engine turning over constantly..

Isn’t starting and stopping extremely hard on an engine also?

So you think you're damaging your vehicle when you start the engine.

I think he found it in the manual … there’s some convoluted combination of steps to disengage it: cranking, then putting into neutral, pressing the brake five times, looking into the mirror and saying “Henry Ford” three times … something like that.

It is only harmful to start an engine when it is *cold*, at least for modern engines. Maybe it doesn't apply to the Model T

I unplugged something from my battery and it’s stopped. You’ll get a warning that flashes on your dash when you start the truck but that auto stop BS is off.

The truck still thinks it’s on bc I’ll see the icon on the dash when I stop but the engine stays on.

ETA 21 F150.

I just wonder when they’ll invent something that can bypass this that can hook to the battery and tie into a harness. Someone did this for Hondas that bypasses the VCM feature on some earlier models.

ETA: just saw above post… could there be a hack?
