Years ago, I deferred pmts a few times, due to some majorly catastrophic life events, some related precarious financial times (08-09), and then just plain financial math (e.g., why pay off a 0% loan the past few years when CD rates are circa 5%?), so I still have a balance from law school.

But I’ve never missed a payment, mostly avoided interest capitalization, and it took me 10 minutes to find my new servicer (I had to reconsolidate to direct fed loans to “take advantage” of no interest COVID crap) and set up autopay in time for the resumption of pmts.

They actually sua sponte lowered my payment by 25%.

Point being: why is this stuff so difficult and life-altering for people who (by definition) at least got into college?
