All of the switching from 3-4 to 4-3 to 3-4 over the last 4 years has really fricked up our front seven. Our guys have been switched back and forth so much they aren’t good at either technique. It’s also fricked up how we recruit the front seven, so we have a weird mix of personnel for both systems. For example Savion Jones is a 4-3 DE that they tried to bulk up to a 3-4 DE. It hasn’t worked unfortunately.

What they were doing before clearly wasn’t working. They had to make some kind of change. I’m sure they don’t want to see Smith continue to get blasted 5 yards off the ball every play. He’s just not a nose guard. His inability to play the double team is eating him up. If you can’t at least hold a double team at the LOS, then you’ve failed the basic requirement. A good nose guard would split the double team and get back in his gap. At this point, no one runs a true 3-4 or a true 4-3. Everyone kind of runs a bit of a blended defense. Offenses are just too dynamic to be rigid with your approach.

Right. It would be more accurate to say LSU is an odd front team but every team runs odd and even fronts. The execution of the finer points of the defense is much more important. A 3-3-5 and a 4-2-5 are basically the same thing but you'll have people argue for days which one is better.
