Car rental at Newark airport

been trying for couple weeks to find a reasonable car rental price at Newark airport, pickup 28th Sep after midnight and return 2nd Oct early morning and seeing some jacked up prices.
Checked Priceline, Expedia, directly from Hertz and Avis and no dice. Anyone got suggestions that may be of help.
It makes most sense to rent at airport for ease of pickup and return and that is jacking up prices it seems
ETA: cheapest is close to $400

Booking something three days in advance is really going to handcuff you here. As inventory goes down, prices will go up.
At an airport like Newark, three dsays in advance, 4 days, $400 is not unreasonable.
That being said, Turo has prices for less than that depending on what you want to drive.

Great chance of this not going well. Don't use OTAs.
Instead of renting at EWR, look at the train options from the airport in the direction that you're going. Find another Hertz or Avis location along a train route, and price it at that location.

I use Turo now. Much easier, better pricing, and better vehicle selections.

Check out the enterprise at Newark Penn Station a few miles away. Easy Jersey Transit train ride, maybe 10 minutes.
Also beware at EWR that stupid monorail completely sucks. It's slow and hot and the doors don't always work that great. Give it plenty of time to get between terminals, parking, and Jersey Transit station.

I tried Turo a couple years ago and haven’t gone through a rental car company since. It’s way easier and I can get a nicer vehicle cheaper
