What’s not intelligent is people like the OP sticking to shift work or a 9-5 their entire lives and looking for extra income instead of just focusing primarily on something that gives them freedom. I know that won’t be a popular opinion on the OT since the majority are shift workers and 9-5 ers

I used to work in an office in which the vending machine was owned by someone who worked for one of our clients. He had several in other offices. People buy shite from vending machines all the time, but when they break I imagine it could be a bitch because people would get all worked up..

In fact in our office some people got pissed over something that happened with the vending machine and when the guy came to fill it up and fix it several people told him all kind of stuff. He left, came back an hour later with another guy and they took the vending machine then like 2 weeks later the guy who owned the vending machines who took it away.. He pretty much gave that spot to his brother in law, but they would have to fill up, id say every two weeks.

Retired about 7 years ago from a local refinery as an operations supervisor. Early years I worked shift work for about 15 years and has a lot of time on days off. I flew for awhile as a charter pilot or delivered light aircraft from factories to customers. Later years as supervisor, spent more hours at the plant and off-time was normally on call, so I began a free grass cutting service for widows and elderly.

Many of my operators had side gigs, such as stump grinding, tree cutting, working at Walmart, investment broker, substitute teaching, woodworking, volunteer fireman, cattle farming and rent houses.

Me neither. I work with people that bitch about working any amount of overtime but have side gigs where they work way harder for way less pay. Makes no sense to me.

I understand that. I bet you don’t do that for the extra money though. That’s what I think the OP is talking about, trying to make cash on the side.

Look, I get what point you are trying to make, but OP didn’t say anything about freedom. He just said extra income. He may well have investments, a sound budget, tax strategies, etc. Making extra income can offer freedom in the sense that he can have something extra to do when times are down or for retirement. Healthcare, 401k’s, pay, etc as a shift workers are great and are valued for long term employees. I don’t know what OP wants to do with his extra income but quitting that for a job that provides “freedom?” What’s that?

Sometimes it is not about money. Both of my children that work at the plants have creative side gigs. Woodworking/furniture building. It is more for something to do on off days and a sense of accomplishment than it is making the most money possible.

Youth baseball umps can make $60-70 per 2 hour game. 15 years ago I was making $100 every Saturday for reffing 2 youth football games that lasted about 2.5 hours total. High School varsity games were about $120.

Plus you get to be somewhat physically active and exercise your mind understanding and enforcing the rules.

I didn’t say quit for a job. I was the same way as the OP when I was a corporate employee. I quit, started my own business. Made no money in the first two years and put in 12 hour days. Now I’m grossing a mil, netting 500k profit and have 401k and health insurance. Freedom is now I don’t have to be at my office. I can do whatever I want. I have a leadership team in place that allows me to travel, spend time with my kids, play golf.

If you’re doing a side gig that’s not for extra income, that’s a hobby. More power to those that do.

My overall point is I see so many people want “extra” income when they could drastically change their lives by taking risk and stop being someone’s employee and making someone else rich.

I get that too but again, I don’t think OP was asking about something you do in the side as a hobby. Or maybe I misunderstood his intention.

I have plenty of hobbies too, but when it comes to making extra money not much can beat the overtime at the plant.

That’s something I’d consider to be a hobby. Honestly, $100 bucks here or there won’t do much for people with a steady income already. But making an extra $1K a day can make a nice difference when sudden expenses come up or vacation planning. That’s my only point. I don’t even work much overtime myself.

agreed, I wasn't directing it at OP. He absolutely needs to work OT if money is the goal. I was answering the guy who said he didn't understand why people would turn down OT and do side gigs for less money.

Side gigs like furniture building may net less money than OT but they allow you to be at home instead of away from your family. Especially if your family hangs out in the shop with you/it is a family project. Much more lucrative than a hobby like golf that costs you $$$ but not as profitable as working OT.

Yeah, I think that was me. I was just saying that if money is the goal, OT is a better option than most side gigs. If the goal is to be off and have hobbies but make some money at the same time then OT obviously isn’t the better option.

Exactly but, don't forget to include fences. A good pressure washing makes a wooden fence look new again.

I work 7 out of 14. OT isnt really an option but any extra money would just be extra. Im not trying to pay bills with it.
