Because it's further down in the link that it's comparing it to previous variants.

I assume the person writing up these things for the CDC every day for the past year would know they were comparing variants, but to outsiders it isn't so obvious if you just read the heading and not the full release.

You did, but some important details that clarified the lede were further down in the article. I had the same initial reaction as you did Rappy, I mean Kaiju.
