Are the refs correct there? I want Clemson to lose as much as everyone else on this planet, but calling that a dead ball foul seems a bit… dumb

For those that did receive it, the refs ruled that since a slide began before the player had reached the first down, the play was over, so the personal foul on the sliding player was a dead ball foul and therefore the penalty applied post turn over on downs

Late hits out of bounds get 15 yards and a first down tacked on. Seems like the same concept.

Correct call. Not sure what's hard to understand here.

But did the runner go out of bounds on 4th down short of the line to gain? If so the ball belongs to the defensive team and the penalty is enforced from that spot. And the next series will then begin after the penalty, therefore the 1st and 10 and not 1st and 25

Why is it different for hit out of bounds?

I’m certain at some point a runner has done that

First time I can recall seeing this scenario

I'm guessing it has to be right by the rule of the rulebook since they had time to review the targeting

It’s not. Both are dead ball late hit penalties. If the hit out of bounds was on fourth down it would be a turnover

I’ve never seen this specifically.

Is there even a 1:1 comparable situation in the past?

Most targeting is done before the player is down.

Initiating a slide is the QB being down. Being down ends the play and its a failed 4th down conversion. I guess a late hit out of bounds after a failed 4th down would be similar.

Dead ball penalties before the whistle don't make sense. I get that he gave himself up but I see the hit as part of that play.

If I’m a lb and it’s 4th down. I’m going all out.

I would assume a guy who is hit late OOB after coming up short on 4th would still get the same ruling.

By the letter of the law it's the correct call. People seem to not understand it because typically these types of plays don't happen on 4th down where the offensive team fails to convert before the dead ball foul.

Can you imagine getting a free shot on the teams qb? Gotta watch out for targeting though.

Once he started his slide, the possession immediately went to Duke because he was down/play is over. So it’s a dead ball penalty. It’s different from 3rd down or fewer. QB fckd up and can’t be rewarded in this unique situation.

As soon as he gave himself up, the play was over. The hit happened after the play. It’s a simple concept.
