Everyone should just buy dogs and hunt public roads. There’s plenty of public roads out there.

Where would that be? Where would a large section of land, that isn’t already hunted, be for them to do that? If it was available there would be someone already leasing it.

I believe their idea is based on a program they have in Montana where a non profit uses funds raised through drives and donations to offer farmers and ranchers money and labor for access.

The group works with farmers and ranchers during the off season several days and helps them with things like fence repair or general maintenance. They also have sponsors who donate farm equipment.

In return, the landowners open up their property to more hunters than who would ordinarily be hunting if it were privately leased.

Talking about the American Prarie reserve thing?

I like the idea and the guys got a good pitch. It all seems prohibitively expensive until you consider that a 5M acre conservatory would cost less than a new pro football stadium. Really puts it into perspective.

I think the issue is your average dude who is a hunter and / or rancher inherently doesn't want anything to do with other people.

I grew up hunting in North Louisiana, if you saw a good buck cross the road you could go put a stand up.

Most land was open and no one cared if you hunted on it.

Now all the hunters up there are like a bunch of whining selfish babies, even if you are on a lease

I've nearly quit hunting in the area and we have our own "small" piece of land

What are you eating at home? Sale paper ground meat is $3.49. NOTHING in life is free. We all have to make choices to prioritize goods, services, and activities in life. Any recreational activity has a cost associated. It is up to YOU to figure out a way to do the things you want.

Comments on this thread are whining because shite isn’t free. This is just another example of our society’s slide toward communism…on a hunting board.

I was an avid hunter ever since I was 10.When I got married I got my wife into it and tried to get my step sons interested but they were never interested.
Have 3 grandsons and none of them are taking to it.

I’m 72 and have pretty much lost interest except for deer hunting,I still love it.I have family estate (300 acres) so access isn’t a problem.
They would just rather sit in the house and play video games and watch movies.I think that’s the issue with lots of young people today.

Yeah I know. Everything has a cost. And breaking into hog hunting when I have to pay to show up, pay for my son to show, pay $1 per pound of every hog I shoot, and then more money if i want to take it somewhere to process is expensive. Yes I could do it, but don’t bullshite me like I’m already spending that much money on bacon at the store.

Whether you like it or not, hunting is very expensive for the casual person who’d like to pop some hogs but doesn’t already own property. Unlike fishing, for example, which is easily accessible to anyone.

So if we need more hunters for conservation, then we need more accessible land. I don’t have a solution bc I’m not a communist calling for the government to confiscate private property. But there’s the problem

A communist would want the government to confiscate private property. Nobody is calling for that. OP is about how habitat is shrinking, the quality of a public land hunting experience has decreased, and the cost of hunting land is going up. which are all interrelated topics.

Squawking that “shite isn’t free derp derp” is a childish macho statement that doesn’t address anything in any meaningful way.

I like the private land co-op style deals mentioned above for places like Montana. I would totally do that around here if it was a thing.

We do need more public land for hunting, too. I think we have quite a bit of really good areas in middle TN, I don't have to go far. There are a bunch of places within 2 hours. Sometimes I run across people in the woods, most of the time I don't. I don't mind not being alone in there, that's just part of the deal. Some days, it's the other people that get deer up and moving as they stomp around.

I took my son on a quick hog hunt just to try it out at a ranch near Seguin. All told it cost about $600 and that’s not even the price of processing the meat. I hear about how hogs are overrunning everything but nobody is inviting me to shoot them and I can’t afford to pay $1 per pound.
Get a pair of chest waders and go walk Pearl River WMA. Walk the sloughs and your odds are pretty good of coming across some pigs

Kisatchie NF is as free as it gets in Louisiana, and you can hunt all kinds of stuff there, including hogs. You don’t need a bunch of special equipment to get started either. All you have to do is put some boots on the ground and do some scouting.

Hunting is fun for most people for the simple fact of getting out in the woods.

I have private land I can deer hunt 10 minutes from my house but I’ve still driven 2 hours to hunt Kisatchie. I don’t do it much, but there’s something about exploring new areas that interests me. Not to mention, you can plan a camping/hunting trip with your kid and still do all that for cheap.

You caught me big guy, man without people like you how would the world function.

This was before the timber companies started leasing their land and they didn't give a F who hunted where.

There’s a good bit of public land in other states that is land locked by private, so although it’s available, there’s no way to actually access it.

Sure you can access it. All you have to do is pay the low low cost of a $1500 per person trespass fee and the landowner will let you through his gate.

A buddy & I ended up paying this on a WY hunting trip back in 2019.

I found the city boy!

All joking aside, I know of timber company and 16th section land that was explicitly open (not implicitly) through the mid-80s in some hot MS counties.

This is exactly what my OP was referring to. What type of experience was that hunt for the folks who went?

Crazy
