Or maybe learn as much about it as you can and not fully trust someone just because they're a doctor.

Straw man. False equivalency. General dumbness.

I would study and follow doctors and scientists who actually understand lipidology. And find a personal physician who does too. Make an informed decision. Merely “taking statins for ‘high cholesterol’” is not an informed decision. (Nor would rejecting all statins out of hand if you have crazy high ApoB. And if your doctor didn’t discuss ApoB with you then get a new doctor.)

Chances his 'doctor' told him to eat better and exercise vs writing a script to put him on a pill? 'Doctors' are all too happy to pull out the prescription pad instead of recommending what can or will work.
