Trump's 2016 campaign was brilliant. I think campaigning is his strong suit. The creativity and unique things he does - maybe now that he's not POTUS full time he has more energy and time to pour into maximizing his campaign efforts. He also has the "Redemption Story Arc" in his favour, as Scott Adams would point out. Humans have a deeply engrained craving for redemption. Trump might do better with moderates this go round, especially if he behaves reasonably well closer to the election.

There was something decidedly novel and exciting about it. By 2020 it was a bit tired and often looked like he was going through the motions - yeah, the whole covid fiasco certainly played a part.

Maybe there's something to be said for taking a different approach at this point. I think others have touched on the idea (even on the stage last night) that what we are facing and where we are headed as a nation is sort of dark and solemn.

Are people ready for Serious Reflective Trump?

Trump was able to play as the outside going against the establishment. He ran a strong campaign and used populist rhetoric to win. Also Hillary was the worst possible pick the Dems could have chosen.

2020, Trump was no longer an outsider. His policies were mostly basic republican policies and he surrounded himself with establishment pricks and did nothing to “drain the swamp”. He completely botched Covid then ran a terrible campaign. Biden just happened to exist in the Dems spot and snagged the win
