The Wolverine (character) is known for being *ahem* "not tall", but rather compact and aggressive, as is his namesake (35 to 40 pound wolverines have been known to take on grizzlies). Sort of the "little man" syndrome personified. And in your mind, a 6'2", 190lb hulking Australian towering over all the other X-Men is an "obvious" choice to you?

Already touched on but terrible example.
Fun fact Dougray Scott was supposed to have the role but chose to be the bad guy in MI2 instead and it went over schedule so they brought in Hugh Jackman
