The study focused on cities with populations between 30,000 and 100,000.

quote:

‘Many people assume that small cities and towns are safer than big cities,’ states the study from May, noting it found ‘small cities and towns tend to be safer than large cities’.

But that should be taken with a grain of salt, as the study found that ‘small and large cities may have the same per capita cost of crime’. The data showed that many unsafe towns had crime levels comparable to big cities.

quote:

‘In Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the least safe small city, the per capita cost of crime is $9,071, even higher than St Louis, Missouri – the most dangerous city on our large city list – where the per capita cost of crime is $8,457,’ states the study.

The least safe towns in the US have been revealed – and they’re largely concentrated in three regions of the country.

Pulling crime statistics from the FBI, MoneyGeek recently ranked American cities and towns from the safest to the most unsafe, bottoming out at number 660.

MoneyGeek utilized standardized crime statistics reported to the FBI from 2021 and calculated crime rates per 100,000 residents using population data from the federal agency. It took into consideration data on violent crimes including murder, rape and aggravated assault, and property crimes like car theft and burglaries.

The second least safe small town, Monroe, Louisiana, has a per capita cost of crime of $7,764, while it is $7,740 for third least safe, Houma, Louisiana. The fourth least safe town is Alexandria, also in Louisiana.

ETA:
Monroe/Population 47,284 (2021)
Houma/Population 33,018 (2021)
Alexandria/Population 44,787 (2021)

I didn't think Houma was that dangerous for its size. Is this specific to violent crime only or all crime?

A lot of those towns lost manufacturing jobs after NAFTA. And they weren't really big enough in the first place to have broader, diverse economy.

New Orleans or Baton Rouge losing 500 jobs is not nearly as big of a deal as Alexandria or Monroe losing a single paper mill or automotive component supplier. It hurts a lot more in those smaller towns.

Pine Bluff doesn't surprise me at all.

Houma apologist.

The price you pay to get a drive through daiquiri and the new Schriever-Lockport fusion place.

Didn't realize Alexandria was 45K.

I thought it was only a big bigger than Marksville.

When you remove Nola, BR, and Shreveport La is still top 10 murders per capita, but most in La think it isn't their area that is dangerous.

ETA: think La is #7 when removed, so I changed it from Top 5 to Top 10.

That’s wild. I had no idea, truthfully. A little surprised by that, tbh.

It's cost of crime per capita

quote:

MoneyGeek

quote:

crime rates per 100,000 residents

quote:

small and large cities may have the same per capita cost of crime

Pine Bluff - per capita cost of crime is $9,071
St Louis – per capita cost of crime is $8,457

It's per capita. If only 100 people live in a town, and 10 of them get murdered, then their "per capita" murder rate is going to be very high.
That would be equivalent to a city of 100,000 where 10,000 of them are murdered.

That's like saying "I was in Baton Rouge last week and it's perfectly fine to walk all around LSU or go in any of the stores near campus."
"There are places you don't go in Baton Rouge, mainly north BR, that were bad in the 70's when I was a kid."
