I actually don't know any bad ones personally, just the Fr. James Martin types that I only hear about on YouTube.

You shouldn't take try to cover for them in this thread at all, really!

What part of that post was covering for priests?

Yes they have. And its deplorable. That said, only a fool would believe that clergy abuse is limited to one faith. Its common sense to realize, if the various Protestant faiths had an established hierarchy and governing body (for better or worse) such as the Catholics do, there would a lot more coverage of their failures as well.

Because I live in the real world , not with my head buried in the sand .

I am glad that the priests you know are not sodomizing children, that you are aware of…. But we have plenty enough of a sample size to prove that the Church for decades has been a breeding ground and shelter for pedophiles .. if you still continue to support the Catholic Church, then you aren’t just a part of the problem, you are THE problem….. of course you will say that those of us living in reality are butthurt (pun intended) so just continue to live in your delusional Catholic bubble .

Serious question:

How do you think the church should handle this, especially given that most of these "lists" that pop up from time to time contain names of priests that have mostly been deceased for a long time?

Putting safeguards in place to prevent a priest from being alone with children doesn't count as an answer, because that is almost universally practiced now.

Closing down the church also doesn't count as an answer, unless you're willing to also extend this action to every other denomination and secular institution guilty of the same things, which would be 100% of them.

Committing men to a life of abstinence has consequences. It’s terrible children have to pay the price for it.

Why are so many Protestant clergy involved in sex abuse? Abstinence is not required among them, yet they have higher numbers of sex abuse than Catholics according to insurers involved in payouts or lawsuits. Protestants have done a terrific of covering it up and there is not a massive bias against Protestants like there is against Catholics.

Do professions make pedophiles or do pedophiles choose professions with close unregulated contact with children? Protestant clergy, Catholic clergy, gymnastics coaches, teachers. They are not all required to abstain in their profession.

My serious answer, is that if i had the answer, i would not be posting on a silly internet message board, i would be out there solving the problem …. All i can say is that i am not a fan of organized religion and i think pretty much the whole lot of them are a crock of shite…. I think it’s hilarious when people make fun of religions like $cientology or Mormonism LDS- they are not any crazier than any other religion, they are just NEWER .. mind you, i grew up learning in a class in my school that back in the day it was possible for a guy to literally PART A SEA.. . or that he could somehow magically transform H2O into drinkable wine.. so pardon me if i dont find it any more ridiculous that Mormons wear “magic underwear” or that $cientologists sign a Billion year contract to serve Xenu and worship the guy who played volleyball in Top Gun .

Well, mathematically your mom is correct. It is a very small number of priests. It doesn't mean I excuse it or condone the abuse but it is not as widely spread as the media would like people to think.

Would you be surprised to know that the abuse is less prevalent in the Catholic church than in the protestant churches? Would you be surprised to learn sexual abuse is more prevalent in public schools?

The way the abuse was handled by church leadership is a serious problem as is the abuse, but let's not pretend it is a blight solely done by Catholic priests.

I say we shut down the Church, or at the very least tax the everloving shite out of them .

This has been attempted many times in the past, even in the 20th Century - many times in the 20th Century. Even in Mexico in the 1920s - the Mex Govt hunted down priests and executed them.

IMHO:

It WILL happen again in the future, probably even here in the USA. The Catholic Church will be subjected to Official Government attempts to put it out of existence by any means necessary.

MANY of our fellow American Christians will cheer these efforts very enthusiastically. We should hold no naive delusions about this.
