I also recall G.C. Murphy Co. They had a little lunch-counter too, but usually with only about five stools to sit, alongside a fairly short dining bar.

But, I could never quite pigeonhole what G.C. Murphy's was. They seemed a little too big for a 'dime store,' yet too small for a 'department store.' Maybe it was what you used to hear called a 'variety store,' like the TG&Y was.

I didn't really have much interaction with KnB, as they didn't show up in my area until the fairly late-1970s. Just like we didn't have an Eckerd's until nearly 1976. I remember I found the Eckerd store's design rather startlingly modernistic, as previously I was accustomed to drug stores and dime stores being older and more individualistic looking, as they were apt to be. Buildings and stores that often dated originally dating back to the 1940s or 1950s, and still doing business.
