Both are bad covers, but which is worse?

Hurt is bad because is is super overrated just like Cash himself.

But Combs' cover is just straight trash. It's like you told AI to generate a generic country cover of Fast Car. You have to have the worst taste in music possible to like that song.

Hurt by Johnny Cash is a beautiful cover (even Trent Reznor appreciated it for the most part) - you could have probably picked a 100 cover songs just by country artists that were far worse (Cash's cover of Desperado off the same album as Hurt is not very good)

Cash is the man. Put away the meth pipe.

Combs’ cover sucks.

Mentioning that fat neckbeard and Johnny fricking Cash in the same post should require a ban.

NIN’s songwriter, Trent Reznor prolifically responded to Cash’s “Hurt” cover with: “I wasn’t prepared for what I saw, and it really then, wasn’t my song anymore.” There was no warning that Cash would be covering “Hurt.” Reznor said,

“Then I got a CD in the post. I listened to it and it was very strange. It was this other person inhabiting my most personal song. Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive.”

Reznor respectfully added in an NME interview that the cover meant more to him than winning something like a Grammy. The cover and video were recorded and filmed shortly before Cash’s death. Popular opinion across almost every genre of music is that “Hurt” by Cash, is the best cover of all time.

Hurt is good to quite good.

Black Pumas did a fantastic cover of Fast Car about two years before Combs so he just missed the boat on that one. Great song, but his cover is not very good.

The Cash cover was a pathetic money grab by a feeble old man most likely pulmagated by his management team to line their pockets before Daddy died. . I haven't heard the other cover.

You do know most money from covers go to the original artist and/or whoever has copyrights to the song - Dynamite Hack for example actually lost money because of the success of their cover of Boyz in Da Hood - but you actually know nothing about the business world or copyright laws or what artists actually make from cover songs - so please, amuse me and continue

Original artists don't get Diddley shite from covers - Richard Berry never got a penny from doing the original version of "Louie Louie".

And since Berry sold his writer's interest in "LL" before it became a hit, he never got a cent from the myriad cover versions either.

You're quoting one song from the 60's which probably never went through the right law to get a copyright- there's been HUNDREDS of songs from the 80's, probably most songs of the later half of the 70's - that got paid from other artists doing their songs - besides the Dynamite Hack example, I personally know of friend's whose bands covered songs that were recorded, put on cd in the later 90's - then ended up on mp3 - and some didn't lose money but none ever really made money- and a few of these songs ended up on MTV, movies, TV, etc.

Could you please cite examples of original performers getting money from covers only b/c they were the original performers?

could you give a little detail?

Give me examples
(with page cites) where original performers -- ÑOT song publishing rights owners -- got money from covers?

Nope - it's not because of a nda - but I'm not disclosing any of that info - google Dynamite Hack & Boyz N Tha Hood (they used a certain word that Eazy E's estate was not happy about even though Ice Cube has writing credits for the song, but from royalties really made no money and released like 3 independent albums since 2000 and hardly play live shows) - above my pay grade, I took one business law class in college - or google what Luke Combs is paying Tracy Chapman (most estimates are probably wrong)

Tracy Chapman has all rights to Fast Car in the same way Prince (now his estate) had all rights to songs like Nothing Compares 2 U and Manic Monday

Luke Combs makes a certain amount of money from Fast Car (probably a lot) and then a percentage of royalties (probably a lot) go to Tracy Chapman and/or whatever group owns the rights to the song (maybe WBD- I know some on the conglomerates merged but I'm not sure who owns what)
