LSU won the Sugar Bowl and the Coaches’ Poll. USC won the Rose Bowl and the AP Poll. The BCS was just an agreement amongst bowls to make it more likely there would be a consensus national champion, but there was no guarantee. They still relied upon the Coaches’ Poll to legitimize their champion.

LSU won the National Title game. The Sugar Bowl just so happened to be the bowl in the championship rotation.

They were cheating anyway. USC had to vacate their 2004 title, but not the AP.
You think the AP means anything when they won't even penalize cheating?
