I used to beg my parents to take me to the Broadmoor Flea Market on Saturdays or the card shop on Sherwood where the Baskin Robins used to be to look at all the Ken Griffey Jr, Shaquille O’Neal, and Michael Jordan cards that I knew I couldn’t afford but I could at least look at them and hold them. I would always end up buying cards that were in the $10-$20 range.
Used to do the same. Jason’s Card Shop in the flea market is still one of my favorite memories growing up

Waterskiing the Tchefuncta river.
Monday thru Thursday there was no boat traffic.
You could ski for hours and not see another boater on the river.
Made it ez to find a stretch with no wind so you could drop a ski and barefoot on glass!

Yeah! What was the name of that place? Also going to the one on Florida (maybe there was more than one?)
Telling our parents we were sleeping over at each others houses and staying out all night riding bikes, raising hell, and sneaking into girls' houses.

BREC summer camps taking field trips going to Celebration Station, swimming, and the movies with popcorn and coke watching Heavyweights and Mighty Ducks.

Me and my older brothers used to go walking/exploring in the woods behind our house. We would sometimes walk for miles and be gone all day. It was so much fun.
One of them has passed away and the other doesn't have the time for such things anymore. I miss being a kid, man.

Waking up without a stiff back
Walking with out my knees popping
Enjoying the rain without aches
Being able to get home at 2am on a Saturday morning and be at work at 6 am

Parents not giving a shite where you were until it was stupid late.
Even then we played basketball or shot pool down the street until 3 or 4am sometimes

Leaving the house on my bike not knowing where I'm going or what trouble I'm gonna get into.

Creatively obtaining cokes and learning how to open the bottles like John Wayne and Lee Marvin in Donovan’s Reef

Fishing with a cane pole with my grandfather and uncles. I was about 7 or 8 and we’d just feed the catfish off the boat dock at our camp. I loved using that flipper de-hooker to flip them back in the water.
Later I loved babysitting so I could spend my money on candy or makeup or teen magazines at K&B.
Spotting the Roman Candy Man and his cart/donkey and begging mom to let us buy a taffy.
Summer camp at Kehoe-France in Metry.
Taking the streetcar alone to friends’ houses Uptown or to the Penny Arcade in the FQ.
Slumber parties with all my girlfriends.
Cooking with my great aunts and grandmother.

Putting up the tent in the backyard and sleeping outside when friends came for a sleepover in the summer.

The last blockbuster appears to be going strong, but it's in a low crime area in the middle of nowhere

I used to wait for my dad to get home from work so he could take me to Blockbuster on a Friday night so we could both rent movies and I could rent a Sega Genesis game. My dad would go straight to the new release section while I ran straight to the game section.
This. Every Friday after school. We would get 2 or 3 movies (1 for Friday night and 1 for Saturday night) and I would get a game.
It was my favorite part of the week!

Riding bikes through neighborhoods and woods with no cell phones or plan or communication with anyone. Hard to imagine that kind of freedom now.
Pretty much every response in this thread measures up fairly well.
But your answer is almost exactly what my answer would be. For me … those years were like 1989-1995. Prime childhood before high school with a bike and total freedom. Ages ~8-14.
My son just turned 9. I feel bad he’s not getting the same experience. I want to set him loose.
