Could you be a caretaker of a hotel for 7 months like in “The Shining”?

Let’s put it into two categories, with and without the internet/cell phones.

Sitting here watching this movie just had me wondering. It’s just you, your wife, and your kid(s). 210 days/nights of nothing but tv and radio.
Modern times, you would have the internet.

Plus, you know about the murders that happened there a few years earlier.

If I had never seen the movie or read the book, I’d probably think that’s a cool job.

Knowing about the movie? Nope

Easy, the film took place over winter which would mean that you get NFL, College Football and EPL is still going strong. There would be a bit of a lull before March Madness but it would be easily doable now as long as they had a decent weight room on-site.

The job was from Nov 1st to May 1st, so 7 months, not 5.

Not being able to escape from the wife/kids for that long would mentally break me rather quickly.

Almost forgot about the bar being closed.

Extra no go.

Watching it too.
I think I could pre internet or modern day. Not sure about TV reception though. If the phones are out, cable may be too? And it’s so remote, how close is the nearest broadcasting TV station?
Always the chance of going stir crazy, I suppose.

Just any hotel in the mountains? Or a hotel that is haunted that is going to mentally terrorize me?

If its just a hotel where there were some murders, but not violently haunted, hell yeah. You'd really only get 3 or 4 months of constant winter conditions, but the other months would have a lot of really nice days. I'd have fun in the mountains. In those dead-of-winter months, you could ski, snowboard, hunt, ice fish, snowshoe, observe cool wildlife, etc. I could do that in modern times or pre-internet/cell phones.

Jack was already f'd from his past. The hotel just brought his old demons back out.

Yes. I could do it.

Just watched the first bar scene. Jack said 5 months, but at the beginning of the movie, they said the hotel was open from May 15th to October 30th. So I’m not sure how long they are by themselves.

Pretty sure he wasn't talking about landscaping or park space.
