In some instances they are very needed. Transportation is one of the entities it is most needed because without it you have government and big business calling the shots concerning job safety. People would be working longer hours and for less pay if you didn't have the little guys making waves about safety conditions as related to their jobs.

Do you actually think that if the little guy didn't raise hell to politicians about unsafe working conditions that the government would actually take the lead in protecting said employees with their safety at work? Corporate money greases the hands of politicians, we all know that but politicians realize that it is the working class that gets them elected so the pols have to listen to them.

That's the upside to a union imo
