Mrs. H2O and I are headed to Lake Como for a few days at the beginning of September. No real chain hotels around, nor do we want to stay at one, but there are so many smaller places it's hard to narrow them down.
Anybody have any experience staying in that area or have places to recommend? Will be coming in and leaving via train.

We stayed in an extremely small town directly above the town of Varenna. It was much cheaper, the views were incredible, and it was nice having a quiet, non-touristy place to relax in the mornings and evenings.
The towns name is Perledo.
However, if you can afford the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, more power to you. We went there for a drink and it’s beautiful.

The Italian Lake Region is beautiful. I have been there twice. We stayed in Lugano, Switzerland which is right across Lake Lugano from the Italian border. Lake Lugano is the next Lake over from Lake Como and is a short drive away.
If you want to stay on Lake Como, check out the Hotel Florence in Bellagio. I have never stayed there, but I have friends who have and they love it.

Appreciate both responses, we'd like to stay on the lake but are also fine with staying in/on Lugano, etc. and doing day trips from there. So many small little towns around that even finding an area or two to focus on is hard.

We stayed in Bellagio. Picturesque town with tons of restaurants and hotels.

Bellagio would be ideal, but we may be too late in the game to find anything reasonable. This trip kinda snuck up on us.

Yeah. Tough place and tough time of year on short notice.
Where else will you be in Italy on that trip?

We're going to the Black Forest in Germany for a wedding and then hopping around Switzerland. May stop in Lucerne between the Black Forest and Como and then finishing up in Zurich

We found Bellagio to be too crowded and touristy compared to other areas, TBH.

I enjoyed the heck out of Lake Como.
But my favorite lake around that region is Lake Bled in Slovenia.
