To get someone to go insane, doesn't there need to be psychological manipulation involved. Just because they are not successful in making Americans insane, does not mean they are not using the tactics of gaslighting sir.
To me, the key element for something to constitute “gaslighting“ is the affirmative desire to produce insanity or to cause another to QUESTION her sanity.
Using the same tactics, with a different goal (for instance, political manipulation) is certainly “disinformation.“ I personally do not see it as “gaslighting.
I suppose that I just like the film enough to make me a purist on this point.

Maybe not to produce insanity, but maybe to get one to doubt their sanity.

Now just replace “sanity” with “reality”.
