I currently have a 40watt crate amp that I bought in the 80s that has crapped out on me. I’m looking for a small practice amp about 50watt for a few hundred dollars. Suggestions?

Without trying to change your mind, just based on your post I would suggest a boss katana as I’m sure others will as well. Nice sounding solid state with tons of effects. They show up on Craig’s list all the time too if you want to save a few bucks

Again, lazy suggestion on my part based on your post but it’s a cool amp for a good price. I wouldn’t personally look at any other amp in that price range. FWIW I have a Yamaha THR which I love, but it’s very much a personal practice amp, not very loud

I tried out one of the Fender 68 Vibro Champ Reverb reissues, about an hour ago.
It's 900 bucks and only 5 watts, but damn that thing sounds great. I would fix the Crate too.
I love my Crate tube amp. Great retro sound. And it has the standby switch.

Depends on what kind of tones you like and how many features you want. Also, solid state or tube.

If you like Fender clean tones the Fender GTX50 will get you closer than any other modeling amp. It also models other amps like Marshall, Vox, Orange, Mesa, etc. Also has effects like tubescreamer, big muff, chorus, etc. Has an app.

Line 6 Spider V mkii has a 60W and 30W. Has the most amp models and effects. Also has an app.

Vox Cambridge 50 simpler than the other amps. No app. Less amp models and effects. Has Onboard attenuator. Has some analog components that make it sound more tube like.

Try Boss Katana/Marty Schwartz uses them frequently in his Youtube videos. They are $340 AT sweetwater.

Orange MicroTerror is an amazing amp. You can practice on a little 10 watt speaker or power a full 4x12 cab.

A copy and paste from a friend's social media feed and my response when he asked this same question last week ...

Don't laugh, but my 75-watt Line 6 Spider IV 1x12 combo I got in 2016 does a better replication of my Mark III at low volumes than my actual Mark III halfstack can. It has a ton of good amp sims and onboard effects, and it can get loud enough to play with a drummer and/or be a good SS pedal platform. I LOVE that people rag Line 6 because it keeps used market prices insanely affordable - there are eight clean used examples on Reverb right now for under $200. HIGHLY recommended.

Pardon the dust, but here's a fast pic of the amp sims on tap.

I also have a Fender Mustang LT 25 I bought for hotel rooms when I travel.

The Fender is cool but in hindsight, I wish I would have bought a small Katana or a Roland Cube. In fact, I will probably sell the Fender and get one of the others before my road trip vacation later this summer.

FYI, my hunch is that since Boss is a Roland subsidiary, the Katanas and Cubes are basically the same amp in different boxes. Acute advice if and when you are shopping for either.
