Where should gasket sit on new drain installation?

When installing a new bathtub drain, would the gasket that comes with the new drain be placed between the drain and the tub, so that the rim of the gasket in slightly visible around the edges?
Some DIY videos online say this gasket even removes the need for any type of sealant or putty.
I'm reading online that this is not correct, but it's how our master bathroom tub drain was installed some ten years ago. We've not had any problems, aside from a small bit of water that sits around the drain due to the added height from the gasket.

Every drain replacement you will buy is going to have instructions. Every set I have ever seen says the gasket goes below the tub and plumbers putty above.

Between shoe and tub. You’ll see it from the top when installing trim.

Others have commented on gasket locations.
This is very much not advisable. Ask me how I know (been there, ended up with giant bathroom puddle the first bath after drain replacement)

Below the tub, putty in the tub.

This, basically the rubber gasket is a form of lock washer and helps the nut to get a better grip to tighten up properly. The plumbers putty is to seal the inside and make it waterproof.
