Went around 7 years ago and if you go on the weekend traffic was a nightmare to get in. Had heard that from others so we went on a weeknight and it wasn’t too bad.
You are about 45 minutes from Blue Bell if they still offer tours.

They have a Christmas in July sale that will save you money. Also, buy VIP parking. Parking is an absolute nightmare! Go earlier in the season, if possible.

Go during the week. We actually went on Thanksgiving night one year and crowds were minimal. Weekends are brutal.
We did the VIP parking and as someone else said, it's worth the cost. We also did the Horse & Carriage tour with the kids and they loved it. Was also a good time to just relax and see everything.
Hotel wise I can't offer any advice as we live south of Houston and just drive up and back.
My advice would be to stay in Houston and spend the day at the Zoo or Children's Museum, then drive up at 5 and stay for a few hours, then drive back.

Why did Santa decide to open an outpost in College Station of all places?

We've been 5 of the last 6 years. Definitely take advantage of the Christmas in July sale that starts in a couple weeks. VIP Parking is also recommended, as they've eliminated the shuttle buses from the free lots that were a little further out. Think they still offer the shuttle from College Station mall, but I haven't used that one.
We've been on weekends & weekdays. Early in the season is less crowded, as are weekdays. Regardless, I highly recommend getting there when the gates open to take advantage of shorter wait times on the major attractions.
There's numerous hotels in College Station. Their website usually has a lodging section with small hotel discounts.

I figured weeknights would be less crowded, and that is my plan.
It'll be hard to go on a weeknight with my son in school.
I guess I could take him out for a Thursday and Friday and go on the Thursday night.
I have my calendar marked for the July ticket sale.
Plan on buying the parking pass

We've been on weeknights the week of Christmas after our kids were out of school for the break. Crowds weren't that bad for the first couple hours it was open.

First follow them on FB, they give out a ton of info including discount tickets, and crowd expectations each day. Weekdays are the best obviously. Parking and traffic is a problem. But you can buy a reserved parking and avoid the commoner lot. The food there is outstanding, BBQ and burgers are the best. Once you get in the main attraction is the hay ride through the lights, expect a line, but it goes fast. Train rides, movies, snow sledding etc are all included. Only things that are extra attractions are meeting and pics with Santa, and Ice skating. Plenty to do there.
Any hotel in town will be ok, it's a small town. Avoid Bryan though.
Century Square is a good place to find food and hotel. It is right by campus.
Other good attraction is the George Bush library. It is actually pretty good. Plus there is a rose garden, and the graves of both George and Barb.
