Is that a little hamster and his wheels in the corner? or a pig and handcuffs?

Most of those states at the top feature winters that would be daunting for an elderly person to endure. And in a state like Wyoming or South Dakota you might have to drive 150 miles to a doctor appointment. There are more things to consider than raw metrics.

Va is a great place. My brother lives in Reston, VA but he can't wait to get out of that place once he decides to retire.

A: Not all of VA is DC Suburb/NOVA.
B: We're talking retirement rankings with the metrics of Affordability, Quality of Life, and Healthcare.
I'm in the Tidewater area and trying to move my retired Mother somewhere in the state. There's a LOT for retirees to do in this state(wineries, walking trails, festivals, etc). And it is pretty affordable if you get out of NOVA or Richmond.

The Health Care component factors in life expectancy. Does the life expectancy weigh lifestyle into their findings?

Mississippi is affordable and doesn’t tax retirement income.

That's only one of three factors taken into consideration.
Healthcare and quality of life is pretty dogshit.

I think I found a commonality between those top rated states, minus fl. Lot less cultcha.

The best states for healthcare will likely be the least affordable, and vice versa.

Not necessarily. As I said earlier in this thread, outside of NOVA and Richmond the cost of living is reasonable in VA.
You can live for dirt cheap just outside of Charlottesville and still be near a great UVA medical system.

This is a pretty shallow take. In Mississippi, it HIGHLY depends on which area you live in.

I spent over 30 years in Mississippi. The vast majority of Mississippi is pretty dogshit. I can absolutely speak on this
Certainly doesn’t help that Memphis and Jackson are both spilling over into the suburbs.
Also this is ranking the best STATES. Not the best single towns that are an oasis in an otherwise shitty state. Hell I think Oxford is a great place to retire.

I’d imagine sales tax and healthcare scores brought Arkansas down.
On the healthcare thing, the healthcare options in places people would actually retire to in Arkansas are fine.
We just have huge portions of the state without enough people to support top notch healthcare locally with the specialties old people tend to need.

Parts of Virginia are beautiful.
Western Va and Western NC are hard to distinguish. Some pretty, rural country.
