Absolutely, females (in general) expect the man to outearn them. Therefore, the more they make, the more they expect out of a man. And during good times a man should be well off relative to his peers.

During the depression, monetary expectation were low.

Women that earn more than their husbands have an astoundingly high divorce rate. When her paycheck becomes bigger than yours, it's a shot across the bow that she's about to "outgrow you", and move on to a man that makes more than her.
