This was of the most inconsistent strike zones I’ve ever seen called…... with that said this graphic is just the play by play data recorded by an ESPN stat nerd showing the general location of the pitch. If the pitch is called a ball and located high/right in the zone, he’s clicking the top right box. A strike thrown high in the zone he’s clicking in between the center box and top/center box.

The Ump made it obvious and ran off the LSU pitcher.

WF had zero answers for the hard stuff inside. Zilch, none, overmatched, couldn't hit it. They literally quit swinging in the 7th and walked their way to a couple of runs.

You’re missing the point. For 5 innings those were strikes for both teams. The zone was equally awful.
Then, inexplicably, he tightened it up on Floyd, and then Hurd, for the bottom half of the 6th l. Top of the 7th the zone was back to the same it had been for the 1st 5 innings.

I just went through every single pitch on that ESPN app and there is exactly three pitches the entire game that the ball is not touching any part of the grid.
I don’t know why the ball would have to be “not touching any part of the grid” to be called a ball. The size of the dot is irrelevant.
If the center of the dot is outside the outer grid, it’s a ball (per the graphic anyhow). If the center of the dot is inside the outer grid, it’s a strike.
Again though - for like the 3rd time - it’s safe to assume that anything extremely close to the outer line is going to be a judgment call, or at minimum that the accuracy of ESPN’s pitch placement comes into question.

I think there were a lot of close ones, but none of these look outside the zone. The 2nd pitch on the last walk wasn’t a borderline pitch- it wasn’t even close to a strike. The graphic shows it catching the bottom of the zone.
There were a TON of knee-high balls. The slider breaking in on lefties was called a ball all night despite catching a frick ton of the plate, but that particular pitch I mentioned was far enough off that this graphic isn’t really doing it justice.

You people are absolute clowns
There is a reason people want humans out of calling balls and strikes and it's not because humans are accurate at seeing small white things move at 90+ mph.

See, I look at the graphic and think it pretty clearly shows that pitch as a ball.
I clearly should have just posted the first batter since apparently it’s tripping everyone up. I don’t think Floyd really got hosed on the next two batters though I did think some of them were very close and he was getting squeezed. But the first walk was egregious.

At what level have you umped?

It was over after the first walk. Floyd clearly got shook by the zone disappearing on him.
He had lived down and on that inside corner for 5 innings and they couldn’t touch him. Then, all of a sudden those same pitches were being called balls.

The box is the zone
Barely touching a line on the box is the zone.
Barely touching a line on the box is the zone.

That was the most aggravating thing ever to watch.
You don’t call it like that at this level unless you’re incompetent or invested.

Yep, certainly seems like it’s clear that the outer boxes are not strikes. Not sure why everyone is digging their heels in.

After I study the graphic and see that you say that, I understand it now. The lines extending beyond the square confused me at first glance, and I thought it was showing him only throwing strikes.
I did rewatch the inning to try to catch screenshots (they didn’t turn out well), the 0-2 to the lead off was over the outer 3rd of the plate and was a criminal missed call- he didn’t just catch the corner, and it wasn’t close.

Not to be disrespectful, but you are mucho incorrect. All boxes are quadrants within the strike zone. Not why we lost...hitting and poor execution lost...1st and 3rd nobody out, no runs scored...game over!!!

Holy shite...that's a AWFUL look for that ump and the ncaa for going with him when you have these 2 teams playing for 2-0 in Omaha..that's bullshite
