Never been skiing before and the wife really wants to take the kids(17 and 11) if possible. Would you recommend a travel agent or trying to book something ourselves? We don’t have a destination as we are just pricing everything right now. Recommendations for family friendly destinations are welcomed as well.

When do you want to go? how much will you spend? Will you and your wife ski?

I would look at places that have more of a town than just a ski resort in case they want to take a day off. Breckenridge, crested butte, telluride have a town, Copper mountain, keystone, big sky are pretty much just skiing. There are a bunch of others than fit each category.

Do you want to drive vs fly?

Family friendly options mentioned are very good...Breckenridge and Park City.Great town activity plus excellent skiing options.

We favor Breck, in part for sentimental reasons but also because of the beauty, dining and other activities available. Book skiing lessons. The kids will pick it up quickly...you won’t.

Plan and book now. Lodging is going to get tight. You can save some money if you can swing an Easter trip.

I would add Steamboat Springs to that list. Southwest flies there and the airport is about 30 minutes from town. They have free skiing on Sundays at Howelson Hill, which is a great place to learn. If you can time it right, you can land on Saturday - Ski for free on Sunday at Howelson Hill - and then move to the real mountain on Monday or Tuesday.

You can do town, hotsprings, and snowmobiling on days when you are not skiing.
