It’s not in Alabama. The one majority black district has around 50% of Alabama’s black population in it. It’s pretty clear what state lawmakers did because they didn’t want it lose an R seat, and there are still portions of the VRA intact. Alabama republicans should have been smarter with how they drew the districts, but Alabama gonna Alabama.

Nevermind I read the comment wrong.
The districts were exactly the same as they were in 2010. They didn't change them to any substantial degree.
To comply with this ruling, the black vote in Alabama will have to be diluted.

Only if the VRA is unconstitutional.

48.01% Black
47.99% White
4% “Other” and “Native American”

This is the way. 100% chance the racists would challenge this.

So representation needs to be based on the amount of melanin you have in your skin? What about other groups?
Are 50% of the reps women?
Is each age group represented proportionally?
Hispanics ar 5% of their population…should they get half a district?
That's what I want to know. The CDC estimates that ~25% of Americans have a disability. I'm ready to be a Congressman . I'll represent my disabled brethren (not OweO) well.

This is how ridiculous they want Alabama's districts to look. The areas to the left and right of Mobile are the same district, which makes literally no sense whatsoever and is obviously outrageous.

And AAs in La have almost a third of the population but only 1 of 6 seats. That's a pretty good argument on its face.
No it's not. This should have nothing to do with race. Districts should be based on geography and population numbers. They should follow county lines where possible, followed by municipal lines, followed by local city council lines if it requires that level of detail.
The entire idea that people are only represented by people of their race is completely ridiculous and has never had a place in politics, and certainly doesn't now. Especially as the mixed-race population rises.
Did Barack Obama count 1/2 each for black and white?

However, the tricky part is drawing a new district. People don't live in neat boxes that makes drawing an extra majority-minority district easy without gerrymandering.
To get two districts that are predominantly black you have to redistrict strictly according to race.

Alabama's district lines are way more sane than Louisiana's and many other states.

We really need to increase the number of representatives to a more realistic number. 435 people to represent 331 million is insane. Repeal the 17th amendment, double the number of representatives, and allow states to have draw districts however they like. Nothing in the Constitution gives Congress the power to require districts be drawn a certain way.

It's a fair ruling. African Americans currently only have 14% representation in the state when they are almost 27% of the population.
Be careful what you wish for: “majority” doesn’t necessarily mean over 50%.

Did the consultant not explain to him that the Hispanics took the district over the 50% statutory requirement, or was he too intimidated to explain the law to this yahoo?
The consultant explained it but the black commissioner insisted it had to be 51% black and not a combination of other minorities in order to reach the 50.1% required to create a minority district…
Black politicians in the south are some of the most racist people and they don’t even realize what they are advocating for…

We don't have a Parliamentary system. We select members of Congress based upon geographic Districts. If a minority population is evenly-distributed throughout the State, they should not be GUARANTEED even one representative.
While this is correct it seems that whites in control, and republicans in control, have historically and presently gone to great lengths to draw districts in a manner that institutionalizes their power and chokes out any opportunity for any candidate from a different race or party to be elected. Gerrymandering can be employed to insulate the white republicans too, and it is.
I would seriously doubt that two conservative members of the Supreme Court would rule in this manner unless the evidence of gerrymandering to insulate certain race or certain political party candidates was rather strong.

And you'd be wrong. There's no evidence. The ruling even says there was no evidence.
Alabama used a computer program to draw the maps and required it to specifically not use race as a factor.
