Vidor used to be a sundown town with KKK ties a long time ago. Couple that with the Jasper Texas dragging years ago and people are still scared of it based purely on reputation.

In my town (not Vidor) the whistle at the volunteer fire department used to blow every evening at 6 PM. My mother would tell me they were testing it, but I've since read that sundown towns had signals like that to tell black people they had better be off the street by then. So I wonder.

People still think Jasper is a sundown town but it's majority Black. Once again, the demand outnumbers the supply.

The older people tell me there were actual signs warning some people not to let the sun set on their arse in town.

eta: The sign even used the hard R.

From speaking to some folks from Jasper, that was a drug deal that went bad.
