Family passports coming together?

We are supposed to be leaving on June 20th and part of our trip includes going into Canada. Back in March my wife and 3 children had to renew their passports. I had been checking our status just using my wife's info and was relieved when last week it said it had shipped. Well, we received it today but only hers. Now when I checked my kids they are all still in process.
I had assumed that since they were all mailed together they would be processed together but apparently that is too much to ask for our incompetent fedgov. Is this pretty standard? Am I fooked? Why is our government so incompetent?

My money would be on your kids’ passports not coming in by June 20

If renewal was March for a June trip definitely should have expedited.

I won't even go into some of our tales of woe trying to do this. Doing it in March may have been too late.
Yeah, I know. Makes no sense.
Six Month Rule
When it comes to entry requirements, each country makes its own rules. As a result, there are certainly outliers. It is crucial to know what these requirements are for each country you plan to travel to and through on your journeys abroad. If you are unsure, you can always double check the information by directly contacting each country's embassy.
Some countries set the three month or six month validity rule from your entry date, some set it for your exit date, so it is important to know each country's rules. Having a passport that is valid five months and twenty-two days beyond your travel date will get you turned away at the boarding gate if six months is required - the rules are that strict.
Countries requiring the six month rule (Psst...Canada).
What Canada Requires
But..
Arriving in a car? Kids under 16? Birth certificate may work?
My $.02.
Count this as a lesson learned, but don't worry yet. 1) Keep praying. May show up. 2) Get your Plan B ready. My daughter (no pics) had to have her US Senator in Oregon schedule an appointment and had to drive to Seattle. They were able to print it on the spot, so there's always that Hail Mary if needed. But line up who those people are and locations now and call and ask. They just don't give you appointments right away. 3) Hate to say it, but push the date forward. 4) Pivot and visit the good 'ol US of A and go to Canada another time.
Fully know the frustration. Been there twice with our older kids for big European trips. Keep the faith, keep grinding and keep us posted!

I applied for my kids passports on February 7th and received them Mid April.

I’m not sure what you’re arguing. Passports must be valid after the entry/exit dates, not before.

Well all our kids are under 16 and my wife's passport already came so looks like we should be good with the birth certificate. Thanks for the heads up!

Sending in the application in March. Understand what the requirements are.

Hope that's great news for you! I'd still call or email and confirm all that based upon your circumstances.
In our case, we contacted the Polish and Czech embassies to double check requirements. Luckily, you don't have to worry about COVID entrance requirements these days.

I applied for 4 via the USPS. 1 came in and then 3 came in together 4 days later.

I still don’t get it. He has one passport already. If the others arrive tomorrow, are you saying that they’re not valid? I’m not trying to be pedantic, but most of your post was about validity post-entry/exit dates.

No, of course not, if they arrive, good to go!
The point was when one should submit the application for renewal of a passport and what the requirements might be for the country you're going to.
Generally, you should apply as soon as you know you’ll be traveling internationally. Several months in advance.
BUT..Passport processing times may vary. Some are facing extended wait times.
State Department Estimates
Right now it's ESTIMATED..
Routine: 10-13 weeks*
Expedited: 7-9 weeks and an extra $60*
"Urgent Travel" Criteria and estimated times.
The point was March "might" have been too late. Some travel experts recommend maybe you should renew it at least six months before it expires given what you hear these days.

I'm traveling in 6-14 days.
Call 1-877-487-2778. We will notify the agency processing your application of your date of travel and request that your passport is processed in time.

Got it. Thanks. Again, I wasn't trying to be pedantic, I just didn't get where you were going with that first paragraph in your first post.
