MILWAUKEE -- A school bus driver in Milwaukee safely evacuated 37 students from her bus just before it became engulfed in flames.
The bus was just blocks from their destination at the Milwaukee Academy of Science Wednesday morning when Imunek Williams smelled something burning, WISN-TV reported.
Williams had been driving the bus for two hours by then, and had kindergartners to high schoolers onboard. She initially thought the smell was coming from another vehicle.
“But then as I started to drive more, the smell and the smoke started to get thicker," she told the television station for a story Thursday.
“I just told the kids, ‘let’s get off,’" Williams said. "I evacuated the bus, made sure everyone was off, and made them line up against a gate. And as soon as we stepped off the bus, I turned around and the bus was just — in flames.”
Firefighters put out the blaze and Williams, who is due to give birth in August, was taken to a hospital as a precaution. What caused the bus to catch fire is being investigated.
“It just feels good that I was able to get them off and no one was hurt," she said. "That’s just my biggest concern because if it was my kid on the bus, I would want the bus driver to do the exact same thing.”

Good for her, she better get a brand new bus to drive after that

This is an awesome story and I don't want to downplay it, but does this:
not seem really fricking weird to anyone else?

Probably going to get fired for violating some dumb policy of not radioing for help

i have never known kindergartners, middle schoolers, or high schoolers, to ever start school at the same times or end school at the same time for they all to be on the same bus together ever.
but maybe they do it way different than any other school systems in that state

I spent 1st grade in rural Washington Parish and rode the bus with kids K-12, but Milwaukee is slightly less rural than that

Was pretty normal in my hometown, but we were very rural.

Giving birth will be the hardest and most heroic thing she’s ever done in her life.

quote:the buses at my poor, rural school district were (and still are) k-12. not many other options in a very rural area with a small school (<400 in the high school).

Sounds like some sort of charter school so I could see the bus carrying all ages.

I went to private schools from k-12. At all three, all grades started at the same time. Not sure how other places were. Smaller rural private schools. And this was back in the 80s.
My son went to public school here in NC. About 3,000 students in high school. All the schools (elementary, middle, high) here do start at different times.
Not sure if it was an 80s thing or a rural thing..

There are still some small districts with K-12 schools bc that’s all the population can support.

I wonder if they going to fire her for not following protocol and going off script?

There was only one bus that came by the house. If you were going to school, you better get on it. Also the driver stopped and picked up anybody that happened to be walking toward town in the morning and anybody walking away from town in the afternoon. It didn't matter who it was. This was in the 70's. I doubt that would fly today.
