This was a very bad thing since 600 or so energy companies went bankrupt while he was in office. The cheap oil from Saudi was killing the US energy industry.
Yes, Trump was too aggressive with cheap energy policy. It did hurt the oil companies. He even said that last night in the townhall with Hannity. However the upside to aggressive cheap energy policy is cheaper energy and goods downstream of energy policy for the consumer.

Oil between $65-$85 a barrel is good for the US energy industry. If we want to be net importers of this stuff the price needs to be kept where it’s profitable to produce. Oil at 2017-2019 prices is bad for the USA. I personally thought Trump would have been better at energy than he was. I feel like the saudis either out smarted him or just bought him. Looks like it was a combination of both.
He negotiated with MbS (Saudis) the month he walked into office (January 2017) for more supply (cheaper oil). In exchange for more supply from the Saudis Trump approved weapon sales to Saudi Arabia.
I'm in the O&G business and I admit TRUCK NUTS are hard to buy when energy policy is aggressive to the cheap side. But we only represent a small fraction of the country. The remaining 95% of the country loves cheap energy.

I agree with most of your assessment, but the cheap oil that hurt US energy companies cripples the ability to become energy independent. The cheap oil is great when it is cheap, but it leaves you with no options when the saudis raise the prices. This is aside the fact that why are we making a country that wants to destroy us rich?
