Uhh... That's just capitalism in action.
Nah. It's flextards trying to be part of the new cool thing so they can post their selfies on instagram and reddit so that the cool crowd will give them the attention they can't live without. The trend seems to be finally fading, so these flexers will move on to tequila next (the next trend on deck).
While yes this is sort of capitalism at work, this is the secondary market we are talking about. It's basically the black market of whiskey. Retailers for the most part still sell all of these bottles at retail prices, but there are definitely many out there who gouge to take advantage of the craze. Those sit on the shelves for a long time usually

This, all of this. It's just the cool thing to get right now. I have a feeling it'll slow down shortly.

Already happening. And I like tequila for my summer drinking habits, but I stick to the cheaper mixer bottles and not the high end sippers.

For bourbon drinkers, mezcal is a better drinking agave spirit and Sotol is a good choice too. The good mezcals have more complexity than good bourbon IMO. With that said, there are plenty of good bourbons in the $60-80 range that are still easy to find.
