Thank you.

Any quirky or cool restaurants unique to the area ?

The Cheese Shop is a cool place to get a sandwich.

There was a Hawaiian themed spot in la Jolla that was tasty and had a nice view. Dukes.

Lots of cool speakeasy bars. But that's not for the kids.

Oh, completely forgot. If you/they haven't tried In-N-Out before.. ya kind of have to.
But research the secret menu online.

I prefer a double "animal style".

You won't be far from Old Town SD, I'd check out Old Town Mex and the other restaurants and historic site.

If you're into tiki, there's False Idol which is well worth visiting.

Day time I'd make sure I hike Torrey Pines, and second the others saying day trip it to Carlsbad. The whole village is walkable. Señor Grubby's is the shite, plenty of kid friendly bars as well.
