1.) Vast majority of Americans would heavily disapprove, especially if..
2.) Automation would shoot women and children just as easily as men. Hard to call a mother and child crossing the boarder an invaders.

It's really easy actually. If you want to cross, go to an established border crossing. If you want to die, try to invade at a non-approved crossing. There's no ambiguity.

If you find a mother and baby at your house one night, wth do you call them? Do you let them stay and live in your house or do you report them to the police or do you kick them out???
