There are some similarities between the songs but I do not believe Ed Sheeran copied Marvin Gay and agree with the jury. Overtime as music progresses there are going to be inevitable inadvertent similarities between songs given the fact that the combinations of notes is a finite number, albeit a massive number (I believe that number is close to 12^12...which is a really big number).

But the vast majority of those combinations would sound like absolute shite. So unless we only want songs moving forward that are complete dissonant nonsensical noise, then we better hope cases like this end up just like this one did - not copyright infringement.

The total number of note variables is big but the ones that actually sound pleasing to our ear is much smaller.

Think of it like food - there is an infinite amount of matter that I can shove in my mouth and swallow. But if you start eating grass, sand, tree bark, or anything else you see then you're going to get sick and die. But if you stumble upon a chicken or portabella mushroom, you're golden.
