Do you really defend Taiwan without putting troops there now? It seems like if China goes hard and fast they can easily take the island. It seems like the real fight would be trying to re-take the island?

That's sort of what I'm thinking too. Seems like a dumb move and a potential waste/sacrifice of soldiers to send them there to defend. But I'm not much of a military strategist.

With what navy? They don’t have the landing craft and Taiwans coastline isn’t the most accessible. They could use paratroopers but I’m not sure you take a first world country that way. They want to take Taiwan while doing as little damage to industry as possible.

If the US fully commits to opposing an invasion*, Chinese ships used to transport troops and massive amounts of equipment across the Strait of Taiwan would be extremely vulnerable to USN subs and US aircraft in the region. If China succeeds, it wouldn't have been easy.

*To what extent the US would actually commit military force is a different question.

Taiwan has over 400 combat jets And 1.8 million ground troops including their armed civilian army. I think China “going fast” could only happen if they dropped a nuke.
