Hired an ad agency that ran a series of "Drink Schlitz, or I/we will kill you" ads.

They thought it would be lighthearted, fun and comical.

Schlitz came out with a series of ads showing a guy putting a Schlitz can on his shoulder saying “I dare you to knock it off”. America was coming out of the Vietnam war and that kind of ad didn’t play well at that time.
Remember, back then Budweiser and Schlitz were the two top national beer brands along with Miller. This spurred Coors to accelerate their expansion plans.
Craft breweries were not a thing then.
