Here is a Pandora’s box I’d like to open. Amps. And settings.

I bought a used Peavey Classic 30. I like the sound of it. Problem is I tinker with it and lose what I like.
This is just stock. Stock amp. MIM stock Strat. No pedals.
I guess I am asking the impossible. But here goes. What do you guys set yours at? To get pure clean? Clean with a little break. And then a growl.
I know the settings and dial combinations are infinite. Maybe you can point me to a video that is a tutorial. Amp 101.
I’ve tried YouTube. Most are just reviewing my particular amp. I need more remedial. This is why I always lean toward acoustics and then modeling amps when I play electrics.

Thats why I like my Crate 18 tube amp. It's so simple.
Gain, level, treble, middle, bass, reverb. No pedal.
If you lean towards a traditional sound, it's there.
I keep the gain on 3, the level on 4, the treble on 9, mid and bass on 2, reverb on 5, and I never mess with it, except for the level now and then.
That's why these guitars have these knobs and switches on them.
I play the top 2 strings in the first 5 frets a lot, trying to imitate a baritone's licks, so those settings work for me pretty well. Also, I'm tuned down a whole step.

In the same boat. Haven't played in years and getting back into it. Bought a tube amp (Fender Blues Jr.) as I had always wanted one back in the day and can afford it now. Surprisingly can get some really good tones, but then start tweaking just that little bit, which leads to a little more, and then end up drifting off into chaos. Have to put everything back to baseline/12 o'clock and start from scratch again .

A 30W tube amp should give you a ton of clean headroom .
I've never played through one. Does it have a dirty channel or gain knob?

To me, less is more.
Some guys say, tone is really in the fingers, and it's pretty much true. I don't like to say that though, because that would be implying that I think I have it mastered.
That is the part that you should work on first though. Get that feel right first, and then use the amp controls to tweak your sound.
In that way, you are bringing all your skills along together gradually, and you probably won't screw shite up. I'm not a big effects guy though, so what the hell do I know?

Overdrive is the only effect I'm interested in. I can get great sounding minimal overdrive through adjusting the pre-amp volume and lowering the master, but to get really gritty without shaking the walls, I use a cheap OD pedal for now.
I've been learning Crossroads for like 3 or 4 weeks (I'm reaching out of my ability level big time to push myself) and the repetition leads to slight boredom, which leads to changing knobs to get a new tone, which ends up sounding shitty after a while. Then I start again. But I see it as a process to learn. I'm playing for myself, so don't care a ton to take the long road.
I've been learning Crossroads for like 3 or 4 weeks (I'm reaching out of my ability level big time to push myself) and the repetition leads to slight boredom, which leads to changing knobs to get a new tone, which ends up sounding shitty after a while. Some people love gear and playing around with stuff
I barely get enough time to play as it is, I want to play not turn knobs
So I got a Boss Katana Air and just use the presets. Perfect, no, but close enough as I'm not a recording artist.
