Football is thrown to continue to strengthen the muscles of the arm. From what I'm told, a football can be thrown with no pain but a baseball is a completely different story.

8. Johnson remained very tight-lipped about Garrett Edwards’s arm injury but did provide a bit of hope when asked about him by the Advocate’s Leah Vann, who said she saw Edwards and Brady Neal throwing a football before the baseball game. Johnson said he doesn’t think Edwards will pitch “in the immediate future,” meaning “the next week or two.” He then joked that if Coach Brian Kelly needs a backup quarterback they can let him know but that he’s more interested in whether Edwards can throw a baseball.

Read a yahoo article today that said he was getting closer to a return. Unless he was just speculating

Duh. Arm speed required to move the object increases with a baseball. Its physics.

Hes got a partial detachment. So kinda odd. No repair needed. But maybe a brace. They’re hoping he can heal on his own. No reason to rush since he will miss next season regardless. And like you said, throwing a football does not stress the UCL. But it allows the shoulder to get work.

I wasn't sure why he would be throwing a football, but this makes sense.

So you mean even though it's only a partial detachment and he won't need surgery, he'll still miss next year? I just assumed if he didn't need surgery, he would be back next season.
