I loved the first ST movie. You need to understand, those of us who had grown up with TOS had had nothing except a cartoon for years.

Finally, Star Trek: The Motion Picture returns us to the ST universe. It was great, even though "Vee-Juh" as pronounced by Persis Khambatta was really "Vee-Jer" in rhotic English, and thus would have given it away to anyone familiar with space stuff, we had a return of all our familiar characters. Nice.

The woke ST Beyond was the worst.

They wanted to be closer to 2001: A Space Odyssey than to Star Wars. And as an expansion of the cerebral aspects of Roddenberry's intent for the original series, they hit that mark as well.

The original set of films pretty much mirror Star Trek TOS over it's three seasons. You have your thinking man's film, your great action film, a comedy, some decent movies, and a Spock's Brain what-were-they-thinking flick.

I agree.

I grew up watching TOS in syndication every day after school. I get that STtM was long and brainy but that’s what I liked about it. It contrasted well as an adult, envisioned world vs Star Wars and some of the other offering.

Wrath of Khan was the bomb. Best ever. The one with the whales was great too as it was a throwback to the “return to past earth” episodes in TOS.

Beyond that, the more campy and silly they got I lost interest.

I also liked TNG and even Voyager was really good…..or maybe it was just Jeri Ryan in the cat suit.

I enjoyed the new movies for what they are but they don’t come close to the first 4 movies. The Critical Drinker was spot on with the modern movies and series being like children running around and being emotional and yelling at everyone.
